The world of picture books has been such a creative balm to me. I am thoroughly in love with the entire process of creating these little gems. Even though I have focused a lot on the writing process, my roots still lie in the illustration. The recent Summer SCBWI conference was filled with incredible talent and an awe-inspiring illustration faculty. Take a peek at who makes up the illustration faculty who was just introduced here at the illustrator social which was held on Friday night of the conference. Swoon, is right! E.B. Lewis, David...

Summer SCBWI Los Angeles Conference – part 1

Posted by on Aug 11, 2014 in Children's Publishing Information, Illustration Event, Uncategorized, Writing Event, Writing Resource | 16 comments

As the regular post-Summer routine slowly resumes, I think back on last weekend which was spent with fellow writers and illustrators at the 2014 Summer SCBWI Conference in Los Angeles. This was the first time that I attended the Summer conference even though I have attended the Winter conference in New York previously. What an inspiring and energizing four days I enjoyed! It was wonderful to meet in person so many friends that I had known online for such a long time. Our room included Angie Karcher, Patricia Toth and Charlotte Dixon and me....

I want to send you a huge “THANK YOU!” to Zaharis elementary school. I spent my morning there yesterday and presented two programs to the students. One of my favorite things of being an illustrator is to visit schools and get kids excited about books, writing and art. Take a peek at this photo: This lovely group of first graders created a wonderful welcome poster for me. There is something that touches my heart when teachers and students take the time out of their very over-stuffed days to make a special welcome sign for my visit....

Posted by on Dec 12, 2013 in Black Bird Exhibition, Exhibition, Illustration Event, Joan Waters, Mary Shindell, Monica Aissa Martinez, Tempe Center for the Arts | 0 comments

This past Saturday evening was the opening of the Black Bird Exhibition and Bazaar at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Being late Fall in Arizona one expects the temperatures to be a little cool, but we were all surprised by the blistery cold that crept through these past few days. Needless to say, it was a chilly evening. Add to that the Sun Devil Stanford game, the Tempe Arts Festival and a swim meet held at ASU and you can imagine the hustle bustle that enveloped Tempe. The opening of the show proved to be a lovely evening. This particular...
