The ABC’s of It: Why Children’s Books Matter

Posted by on Sep 22, 2014 in Exhibition, Illustration, Inspiration, Pura Belpré Award (Latina) | 4 comments

Back in June of this year I spent a week in New York city meeting with Editors and Art Directors. It was a very hectic trip that was very tightly scheduled. With over 20 meetings in four and a half days, there was little time to enjoy what New York has to offer. I did manage a really quick peek at the amazing exhibit The ABC of It: Why Children’s Books Matter at the New York Public Library. The impact of walking through this exhibit was profound. One doesn’t quite realize how deeply ingrained children’s books have been on one’s...

Fundraiser was a huge success. Thank you!

Posted by on Sep 15, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

It’s a little off topic this week, but I thought I would share with you the results of our fundraiser that we held this past weekend for King’s surgery. As you might have read, our foster horse King needs surgery. We held a fundraiser for him and for a donation people were able to paint King or hug Horatio, one of our alpacas. Actually, I think most everyone did both and had a hoot of a time. Here are some photos of our fun day. Even my wonderful daughter, Izzi, decided to contribute by being a human vending machine (it was completely her...

Paint King or Hug Horatio Fundraiser

Posted by on Sep 11, 2014 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

Many of you know that I am a huge animal lover. Our beautiful foster horse, King, who is in need of surgery. He has a severely rotated coffin bone and needs surgery to cut a tendon to prevent it from rotating any further. The medical bills so far, the surgery and the needed medication, etc. will come to about $1,300 but the Wildhorse Ranch Rescue currently does not have the funds to cover this. So, King has graciously offered a fundraising solution. For a $5 tax deductible donation (or more if you like) you can paint him with kid-safe...

Never Abandon Imagination – Tony diTerlizzi

Posted by on Sep 1, 2014 in Illustration Event, Inspiration, School Visits and Presentations, Tony diTerlizzi, Writing Resource | 8 comments

This post finds itself onto my blog in a rather belated fashion. You see, the amazing Tony diTerlizzi visited my daughter’s elementary school at the beginning of May this year. He was on the national book tour for the third and final book in the “WondLa” trilogy, “The Battle for WondLa,” and ours was one of only two schools that he visited in Arizona. I’d like to think that blogging about this great event is better late than never, right? In case you are not familiar with this icon of the children’s...

Summer SCBWI Los Angeles Conference – Part 3

Posted by on Aug 25, 2014 in Illustration Advice, Inspiration, Judy Blume, Linda Sue Park, SCBWI Summer Conference, Sharon Flake, Tomie dePaola | 6 comments

As a writer and illustrator I sometimes struggle with frustration. There is a certain degree of self-doubt and lack of confidence that finds its way into my thinking on a regular basis. Thoughts of needing to be better at what I do are quite common and often so loud in my mind that I prevent myself from getting anything done. What I didn’t realize, is that this self-doubt is part of what every writer and illustrator goes though. The 2014 Summer SCBWI conference in Los Angeles this year really drove this concept home to me. You might have...
